2018 was a good Riesling year in the Canberra District, producing beautiful fruit in bounteous quantity. It was the year this little vineyard came of age, after 5 or 6 years of restoration by Harvey Walsh and Dennis Hart, in partnership.

The grapes were hand picked by volunteers, and made by Andrew McEwin, in a bone dry style, and in what would turn out to be this great winemakers’ penultimate vintage at Capital Wines.

Colour: Aged pale
Nose: Lime marmalade laced with vermouth.
Flavour: Tastes like the first water drunk when dying of thirst. Still young, developing complex characters, enticing.
Summary: You wonder: “where have you been, Eliza, all my life?”

The 2015 vintage benefited from a perfect cool climate season: warm days, cool nights. The fruit came from Dog Trap Vineyard, recognized as one of the best Shiraz vineyards in the district.

The fruit was basket pressed, the wine made slowly with minimal filtration or intervention, no fining agents, in small vats containing French oak staves.

Colour: Dystopian dreams.
Nose: Spice and longing.
Flavour: The wine fills the mouth back to front with fine tannin, like surround sound. Classic cool climate shiraz, where sumptuous disrobes to svelte. Classic.
Summary: You are replete.

Made from excellent Pinot Noir fruit grown with passion and care by Elaine Staples at Kerralee.

Winemaker: Andrew McEwin.

Colour: Pale as ruling class love.
Nose: Pinot Noir finds it’s white wine essence. Restrained apricot, strawberry, cassis.
Flavour: Dry, long and longing: Pinot flesh aching for skin.
Summary: A rich, pale wine, dry as thirst.

The back label tells the story of how this dog Trap Vineyard wine came to be a Yazzbar wine, when, not long after Yazzbar opened, we were nearly closed down by a cowboy undercover copper, who has since removed himself or been removed from the police force.

The wine itself was produced with fruit from Dog Trap vineyard and made by John Leyshon of Mallaluka Vineyard.

Colour: Alluring, drawing you in from light-filled claret to intense purple.
Nose: Totally distracting. An olfactory pied piper slips you away to a closed-eye dream-land doona bed of silken blackberry where the air is nectar.
Flavour: The wine retains structure and elegance and fills the mouth the way fine music fills the soul.
Summary: The wine is ageing like a wine lover: with grace.

2016 Yazzbar Gemma Sangiovese

$240 for case of 12.

Fruit of good quality was sourced from Gundagai. Winemaking by Bill Crowe. The fruit was light bodied, and small parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera were added – less than 10 percent all up, but a subtle improvement has been achieved, notable as the wine ages.

Colour: Bright, glossy deep red
Nose: Savoury character meets flower power gal for afternoon capers.
Flavour: Makes your tongue twirl round the mouth, looking for a dull spot, finding only sensuality, balance and length.
Summary: Savoury, dry Sangiovese. A late afternoon, a cup of wine, and thou.
